Sunday, January 07, 2007 White Dog Cafe, Vivo City First time there!! There's a lovely view from the restuarant.. there are sofa seats, but we passed cause they were more meant for lounging.. the tables were much lower than the seats. I loved the feel of the cafe. Simple and clean. Sijia noted that they had specially placed their knifes between the slits of the fork so that they would stand up. lolz. ![]() Calamari!! These are the biggest rings of calamari i've ever seen. haha.. but this is also one of the best! my only disappointment is that for such a huge ring, the ring of squid inside is thin.. but still, the bread crumb-batter is perfection- crispy and not oily at all. With the light dipping cream and a little bouquet of salad leaves at the side. It's balanced and gobbled up with little guilt! =) ![]() Squid ink pasta~! haha.. this is my first time trying this stuff.. Was never really tempted.. but they seemed proud of this dish (they had a picture of it in the menu..) so i went for it! The verdict ain't good... sorriz. First: ink is ink. it stains your clothes if you're not careful (luckily i didn't get any on my clothes..) and it stains your teeth and tongue a rather cool charcoal black. But if you're dinning with clients or friends who doesn't appreciate such humour, stay out. Luckily, i was with CSS, so it became our entertainment. =p Taste-wise, it's lame. Their pesto is good, covering any fishy ink taste, so the ink is mainly for that sticky, inky texture... but i'd rather have their pesto with cream.. And the king scallops i got were so thinly sliced and cold. Limp. Considering that was the only topping for the pasta, they could have been more sensitive. Now that i've tried squid ink pasta for you, DON'T try it. =) ![]() ![]() Satin Restuarant @ Geylang They have shifted!! to a bigger place, but not grander.. and the decor, as in the old place, is kept to the minimal- newspaper clippings of articles featuring their dishes. But the place is still packed!! and they're understaffed... so bear with the wait.. but waiting for dishes of this quality is definitely worth it!! =) ![]() Scallops in a basket!- previously, they used lobster for this dish.. now they've changed it to scallop, which is a much wiser choice! i love the taste of the sea which is still light and heightened by the simple toppings- coconut and a single fried curry leaf. Eat the basket too!! And the crunchy finely chopped cabbage at the bottom of the basket further emphasizes the smooth, almost lux texture of the scallops. ![]() Abalone, sea cucumber and bak choi. I don't realli like sea cucumber.. but it's prep by Satin, so i ate it. =p There are many types of sea cucumber.. this is the soft type that slidders down your throat. heh. The sauce is the usual, but i like this dish bcos the taste of the sauce is infused into the abalone.. even if you slice it thinly (as i always do with abalone), the taste lingers. And perfectly cooked, it's bouncy and tender. delicious. ![]() Another of their famous dishes- this is skin of dragon fish. (long yu) Deep fried to an absolute crisp, you're supposed to dip it into a bowl of consume before crunching into it. Surprisingly, the consume doesn't make damp and soggy.. instead, it juz boosts the taste- Magical! And it's ohh-so-crunchy.. much much better than any chips. Addictive!! ![]() Other Mains.. ![]() Lemon Pork Chops, here on my dish, on a bed of veg- dou mieo. The veg is tasty!! my cousin, who doesn't like veg, was helping himself to it! The Lemon Pork chops is too lemony for my fancy, but it was good, nonetheless. The pork chops have been marinated and fried once through before the sauce was ladled on.. and you can taste the fragrance of the pork as you bite into it, althou the sauce is lemony thick. ![]() Loved the sauce.. i never thought cod would taste so good with such a heavy flavoured sauce.. Cause normally ppl are afraid to cover the taste of cod (cod being expensive mah..) and when you fry cod, as they have, it tends to be really oily cos cod is a fatty fish. BUT!! this is a winner! The sauce compliments the cod sooo well, reflecting the skill and how thoughtful the chef is. Loved loved loved the baby tomatoes which burst in your mouth.. cooked with the sauce, they have become extremely sweet.. i was addicted. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mango Pudding in a shape of a fish! haha.. shape's interesting lah.. i still like tung lok's mango pudding best!! But we got it FOC!! cannot complain lah.. ahahaha.... ![]() Fried Tang Yuan!! cripsy on the outside, oozingly soft on the inside.. wished they had peanut fillings instead of seseme.. that would be realli realli nice.. =p ![]() |
