ZUKO!!!
along East Coast Road, Siglap area.. Next to the Pie Factory..

It's my 2nd time there.. the first time was pretty good, but i didn't take pics.. this time i snapped afew! =) it's alittle pricey thou.. and judging from the number of articles, i guess they have reason to increase the price..

i didn't like the big chalkboard listing the day's items.. you could have little chalkboards at the table if you want, not a big one which isn't visible from all tables.. it's juz wrong to make your customers strain their necks to look at the board.. or stand in the middle of the cafe to read the menu... so thou some do like it and think it's unique, i think it's unique but stupid. sorriz.

i like it that unlike Micheangelos, i can see what i'm eating.. and i like that they used red cloth table mats, which are striking against the white table cloth. didn't like that the space was small.. get bigger place, you've got good food!! so i would love a comfy place to enjoy it too...

service was professional and friendly, except for one waitress who was evidently tired and had a realli irritating expression as she went around filling up ppl's glasses of water.. but she wasn't rude, so that's okie.

The food there's really good. And if you have $50 for lunch/dinner (prices are same for both meals), then do go and enjoy!!
-------------------------------------------

Items we had which i didn't take pics of:
Tuna salad with asian dressing: delicious!! love the tuna, which was cooked on the outside, raw in the inside.. forgot what they call it.. starts with "pa....... sth.." haha. but it was an unusual salad!!
mushroom cream: not bad, it's the light type.. not the type that fills you with warmth as i think soup should..
seafood brique: salty, as most... but seafood flavour (esp lobster!!) was strong.. and i liked it. mom didn't.
escargots: their garlic dressing is heavenly, if you like garlic.. pesto~!

main courses below:
dad's pork ribs
mom's leg of duck
bro's crab meat and pinenut pasta
my prawn pasta in saffron cream sauce--> the BEST pasta around!!!

ser fumbled with chopsticks @ 8:52 AM | 0 has delicate hands

calamari!! ~ one of my fav starters!! these are fried with a extremely light batter, similiar to tempura.. it's juz the perfect snack, actually, rather than a starter.. i wished they had served it with wasabii mayo instead of the thai chilli sauce... potentially addictive! Posted by Picasa

ser fumbled with chopsticks @ 8:51 AM | 0 has delicate hands

pork ribs!! tender and soft, not too heavy in taste, with a juicy ring of pineapple! unlike what some restuarants like to do, this ain't drenched in sauce.. the quality of the meat shines thru! which is what food should be abt! Posted by Picasa

ser fumbled with chopsticks @ 8:49 AM | 0 has delicate hands

Duck leg!! one of their specialities!! the flavour is strong, meat is deep red, and the duck is imported from france. it's a rich, volumous flavour; on the heavy side.. balanced with the veg, it's pure perfection. however, it's fatty.. health-concious mom was scrapping and cutting out fats.... Posted by Picasa

undoubtly, THE BEST pasta i've ever tasted!!!
**Fresh prawns and saffron cream sauce!**
this is the ultimate to me!! i loved the sauce.. kumin, saffron, and cream.. it was.. hmmmmmmm... irresistible! the pasta's a generous portion.. so it reali fills you up. The BEST thing? you don't get sick of it, which is typical of cream pasta.
loved the addition of tomato bits instead of capsicum which other places love to do with cream.. Basil leaves fulfills the vege portion and takes away the guilt of not eating vege which i normally have when i eat pasta... the prawns were extremely fresh and springy. everything juz blends in to make this dish the pasta to die for! comfort food? - this is juz it!!! NYDC & tcc with AA202 group mates!!

Webbies:
http://www.nydc.com.sg/index.html
http://www.thecoffeeconnoisseur.com/

We're juz students sick of canteen food... heh.
Thankful to groupmates who drive!! Candice who drives me back to hall aft lessons, and mark who drove us to Holland V!! haha..
Well, guess now you guys know that it's my fav haunt.. oh well, there are other places too!! but.. let's juz try to finish with one place first! it's a food haven!!

Anywayz, there's a previous post on the NYDC with candice le, so i won't ramble on abt the food and how nice the ppl there are to tolerate us for studying/discussing/crapping abt non-work issues.. anywayz, most of us know NYDC lah.... =p

tcc @ holland v came as a surprise.. cos my previous experiences with tcc (not at holland v, however) wasn't realli all that great.. they were okie, abit overpriced, but juz realli okie.. this time, thou the food took alittle long to come for my empty, rumbling stomach, when it did come, the taste was terrific! so good, that i bought a packet of their pompadum (the indian cracker?) for $4.50.. and also to get the membership lah.. i'm sucker for such things.. haha..

We went tcc to celebrate the project's end.. it was a perfect place to relax i guess... loved the decor, loved big, red comfy sofas which i was so tempted to juz slp.... love holland v for being almost empty and so laid back.. and loved the food!!

btw, remember my entry abt the french restuarant last year? it's in today's lifestyle!! Au petit! they're realli realli good.. and the prices haven't changed.. wish i can go back there again!! =)Posted by Picasa

My fav!!! the classic mushroom and ham baked rice!! (forgot the name of it on the menu.. juz go search for it, heh, there's a thumbs up beside it lah..) love the mayo, thou i know it's quite sinful to have mayo and cheese together!! but this is a dish to die-for... the bear gets to look only.. hands off!! haha.. Posted by Picasa

my slice of the hawaiian pizza.. lovely crispy crust, great tomato base, generous slices of ham and juicy pineapple slices hidden under the layer of mozzarella cheese!! ~ good idea to have the pineapples below the cheese btw.. so they dun become "old"... thou sometimes i do like the brown caramelized pineapple.. Posted by Picasa

Apricot Herb Crust Dory with Hazelnut & Apricot Cream
Delightful! and yet, really healthy.. i loved the apricot crust, thou i'm not a fan of apricot.. Dory is a easy fish to cook... and cheap, i might add.. it'll be nice if they used fresh fish.. but oh well, it's tcc, not some food cafe.. =p but, we're paying quite a price for dory... love the salad bunch at the top.. mash potato was buttery (which i like), but wasn't warm as i'd prefer it to be.. and.. where was the hazelnut? didn't catch it anywhere.. *heh, i'm a fan of hazelnut! =p Posted by Picasa

Tiramisu!! i love liquer, so the taste of overpowering rum was a very lovely and intensed surprise!! but for those who don't appreciate it, it's really strong.. creamy and light, nonetheless.. didn't like their base which was alittle soggy for my liking... but the decor is juz decadent! don't you agree? Posted by Picasa

one of the BEST bread puddings!!! i'd rather they dun give the icecream and give me a BIGGER portion of the bread pudding!!! =p Posted by Picasa

MICHALANGELO'S!!
~ near holland v there lah.... check out the webbie for add... =p

Appetizers:
Stuffed Bocconcini- $18- "Globes of fresh mozzarella filled with a compote of pesto roasted sweet capsicum, semi-dried tomatoes and pinenuts atop thin slices of bruschetta"

Duck & Crayfish Salad - $23 - "An ensemble of smoked duck breast, marinated crayfish tails and asparagus on a couch of mixed lettuce, beetroot and pumpkin chutney, dressed with a spicy orange sauce"

Main Courses:
Black Cod
Agnelo alla Griglia (lamb)
Risotto Nero
Fettucine con Salmon

- find their descriptions on: http://www.michelangelos.com.sg/
=p heh, lazy to copy and paste...

Well, no pics cos it's basically too dark to sneakily snap pictures when the waiters are not looking.. hehe.

Anywayz, you won't be disappointed with the presentation lah.. go ahead and check out the webbie for their delicious-looking pics which standard i'll never attain with my mobile phone cam.. haha.

Was there with my family- dad, mom, bro and i! so tt's why there's 4 main courses! no no, can't finish all by myself... and for students like me, yes, it's EXPENSIVE! 4 of us ate a dinner of $249! and no desert.. no space in the tummy for it anywayz. =p

For appetizers, dad chose the duck and crayfish, i chose the stuffed Bocconcini.. and i realli did prefer my choice!
duck & crayfish salad: the orange dressing was too sharp for my liking.. and it was a disappointment that the crayfish was limp.. but the duck was not bad... i like that the duck had a light flavour, which matched the salad well..
stuffed Bocconcini: read the top to know what exactly it is.. heh. i chose it cos it was interesting lah.. and expected to haf to finish it myself.. *evil grinz! but in the end, everyone liked it! love the way the texture of the cheese and the lovely warmth of the tomato stuffing.. and the dressing for the salad was delicious! olive oil, vingrette and pinenuts! i like toasted pinenuts!! thou it's cheaper than the rest of the appetizers, and sure, as of all rather ex resturants, the servings are mini.. but it taste great!
there's only 2 other places where there's good salad: Sizzler, and Pan Pacific's Summer House Cafe - they have sun-dried tomatos that you can toss into your Caesar's Salad (tt you haffa make by yourself ofcos!)

The main courses!
Mom said hers was good, so i guess the Black Cod is good! haha.. mom's abit fussy sometimes.. cos she's a cook! so if she says it's good, it's guaranteed good! but she said the spinach was salty... hmm...

Dad had the lamb.. he gave me a piece of it.. and it was simply scrumptous! infact, it's voted the best main dish at our table!! it's perfection!! sweet, tender and the taste is controlled. no heavy, meaty lamb taste.. it was delicate, slightly crisp at the edges, juicy in the middle piece of rib. yes, yes, it's a muz try if you're there!

Bro's risotto and my salmon Fettucine was on the salty side.. but the risotto is realli good! in the sense that the flavour of the seafood broth was realli not shy at all! it was a spring of flavour that was unexpected.. well, cos it's juz rice! but i'd think tt they should add more meaty ingrediants into it.. afterall, it's juz rice and seafood noe... but, still, it was well-done!

My salmon Fettucine was not bad for overall.. i loved the cream sauce (yupz, i prefer cream to tomato).. undoubtly the best cream sauce- not too thick tt it cogragulates as some does, and juz delightfully creamy yet not heavy. Had a fun time twirling them around my fork in the sauce... and the sauce juz coats it so beautifully you taste both the pasta and the sauce in a great balance of flavour. But my disappointment was that the salmon was salty, and tasted like smoked salmon.. the reason why i ordered it was bcos they said "salmon fillets" not "smoked salmon"... why can't they put bouncy boiled salmon pieces that i normally put in mine own when i cook at home? i can't do the lovely sauce that they do, and it'll be marvellous if i could! cos the taste of salmon fat (you know, the part near the skin and the skin..) and cream will be juz luxury... okie, i digress.. but it's not a bad pasta dish..
----------------------------------------------

Isit worth $249? not realli.

the thing i hate abt these places is the uncomfortable mix of casualness and class. it's like neither here nor there.. if you're an ang moh, maybe it's casual.. but the waiters are all classy. i don't like the way that they repeat your menu item.. cos i obviously can't read french (for another place nearby..) nor italian, so i point to the items on the menu.. you don't haf to make it obvious tt i don't know how to read rite... my family doesn't gif a fuck if i can't read french la.. and it's abit condesending.. like if you don't know french, please stay away....

but, it's noted that i know it's not easy to be employed there.. a friend of mine, who's a chef, told me that they haf to meet high standards.. and you can see that they are indeed skilled.. like the way they balance the plates effortlessly on their wrists. haha.. but it's their attitudes tt are irritating.. like they're too busy too cater to you.. i like my attn, and i like it unrushed, polite and inviting. if the other tables' all ang moh too.. all the better, cos the same standard of service is expected. thankyou. =)

The ambience was... irritatingly dim. There were beautiful artworks and sketches on the walls.. they were "featured", sorta, with lights.. but the ones of the ceilings had "faded into the darkness" of the night.. and the ones on the walls were not realli "featured" cos the light shone away from them... i saw that they had simple chandelier lights but had declined to use them.. why?? and it was quite difficult to see what we were eating sometimes.. like in the olden times, when they depended on candle light to see- we depended on the candle they placed in the middle of the table for extra light... tt was seriously lame. Dishes took alittle too long to come too.. and they had a open kitchen concept- you can smell all the other food being prepared as you wait.. lolz.

Okie, on to better stuff, i'm grateful that the description to the dish is in english. And i love the way they've described their own dishes. it's good to know that they put in pride, even in the presentation of the menu.. not only do you know what's coming, there's anticipation of what's coming...

I appreciated when the bar tender came to ask abt my bro's drink - Michanlangelo's Sling (i think.. it's the first item on the drinks list..) we didn't realli touch it cos no food had arrived.. bad to haf alc on empty stomach... and the bar tender got worried that he had created a lousy drink.. he even came over to ask abt the mix, to explan his mix, etc... i felt bad for not drinking it.. lolz. but it's nice to see that he bothered abt his creations.. unlike some bars... they juz pour you a drink as if they're doing you a favour by attending to you. And the drink was real nice... i like banana juice and rum. *hic!..... nah, juz kidding, it's the type of drink perfect for a date.. gets you relaxed, but nowhere near drunk..

And on the way out, we met Angelo! the head chef / creator Michalangelo's! he was sitting on the bench outside to take a break.. juz as we were leaving, he said to me: "thankyou, Signora." and bcos of that, i forgave the waiters who got on my nerves. =)

One of the BEST porridge!!!
I love porridge!! haha.. picked that up from my mom...
Nothing beats hot pipping porridge on a windy, cool, rainy day! lolz.. nowadays it's mostly rainy leh.. and that makes me a happy gal! cos i like rainy days which are laid-back and cool..
As usual, when daddy fetches me home, it's fill-the-tummy first! haha.. we would not eat breakfast nor lunch so that can sneak a snack before dinner at home.. haha. this time, i was realli tired.. so i slpt... and dad must had been busy on the phone hands-free cos he apparently juz followed the highway and missed all our usual turnings- bukit merah market, macpherson's.. all missed.. and exited at Paya Lebar. So we turned to the market nearby, i think it's Geylang Serai there.. the Geyland Poly Clinic there lah... the hawker center was virtually empty!
Dad was still busy on the phone, and my tummy growling, so i had a popiah for $1! and it was realli yummy!! it was packed full and firm, generous with egg.. but my only pick was that chilli-not-enuf.. but for $1 for one roll, it was well-worth it!! and delicious too!!
--------------------------------
Walked on.. till near the end of the hawker center.. there was an apparently quite famous wan ton mee stall.. but not in the mood for wan ton leh... so went for the stall next to it instead- porridge!! for $2, it was reali good value!! it's a stall opened by 2 PRC - brothers i think.. i was quite shocked when he served us the whole you tiao.. *see pic!! but when you bite in, it make sense.. cos it's so crisp and delicious (thou it's not hot nor reheated), and not oily at all!! dipping it in porridge, it was realli oh-heavenly!!
Besides the you tiao, the liao (ingrediants) in the porridge was definitely not juz worth $2 one!! *refer to pic below* they had pretty generously put in some minced pork balls in there, pork slices, etc. the usual that normally they charge abt $3 for!! and the seasoning was juz nice!! the porridge is alittle bland, which juz brings out the flavour of the you tiao, the pork, and the garishings - the usual spring onion and salted veg.. it's healthy, delicious, and realli worth $2!!!
There are still little gems to discover in Singapore!
When i go back, i'll go find the name of the stall okie? =)
--------------------------------------------------------
Update for the NTU Hall 2 canteen dim sum:
Standard dropped drastically.....
The siew mai looked dried and shrivelled.. i rejected it. changed it for feng zao - stewed chicken feet... which was seasoned with black beans and chilli oil..no wait, should say drenched in chilli oil and black beans..
also ordered the stewed pork ribs with black bean paste.. that one's okie.. and lastly, the prawn dumplings (har gao).. remember the little transparent jewels that pack whole juicy prawns in them? - they're like little pebbles now... sighz.
No way i'm eating that again till they improve it... so disappointed... =(
